Innovation in Permeable Pavement

PLANNING, DESIGN MANAGEMENT & CONSTRUCTION MANAGEMENT

Whilst on secondment as the Integrated Water Management Lead with Yarra City Council, Damien led the planning, design and construction of the Rutland Street and Ramsden Oval permeable pavement pilot projects.

The two projects included an innovative permeable project that uses a trial product developed by Melbourne University and Porous Lane.

The Ramsden St pavement is anticipated to treat over .29ML/ per year.

The pavement is made from around 70% recycled tyres and thereby diverts a sizeable waste item from landfill. The pavement is designed to improve stormwater quality and reduce pollutants before stormwater enters the downstream waterways. It also reduces potential impacts of urban flooding and recharges the moisture of the soil beneath.

These projects have gained significant interest from local government agencies, Clearwater and Sustainability Victoria.

Both projects are part of an ongoing research program involving Melbourne University and Council to investigate the durability, urban cooling, stormwater quaility and quantity reduction benefits.
